President Mubarak delivered a speech
in the occasion of celebrating the 6th of October victory at the Presidential Palace of Heliopolis.

Fellow Citizens, I talk to you on the 33rd anniversary of the great October victory; one of the great days of Egypt; a day to be kept ever in the nation's memory and to be celebrated by our successive generations.

To day I talk to each and every Egyptian, male or female, particularly to Egypt's youth; to those who did not live that critical stage of the nation's history, nor have they witnessed the sacrifices and offerings by a great generation of Egypt's sons.

That generation sacrificed lives and blood and scraped morsels of the daily subsistence for rebuilding their armed forces. Greetings to a great generation I talk to our youth about the contributions of that great generation, telling them as we celebrate the victory of October that Egypt today aspires for your contribuations so that we can build together the future that we hope for our children and grandchildren.

In one blessed days of Ramadan, corresponding to the sixth of October 1973, our valiant armed forces accomplished the greatest of our victories. Thus Egypt overstepped the humiliation of setback and occupation, it transcended over claims of skepticism and frustration, and crossed from defeat to victory. Our armed forces men crossed the Suez Canal and took hold of the strong of Barlev line within six hours.

They restored the honour and pride of the nation with their souls and hoisted up Egypt's banner on the occupied land of Sinai, thus boosting the morale of citizens and the nation. As I talk to you on the anniversary of victory, I greet the armed forces service men, the shield and sword of the nation. Greetings to their courage, heroism and sacrifices, and greetings to martyrs who sacrificed thier lives to restore Egypt's territory and pride.

Moreover, I greet a great generation that out lived years of defeat and their sufferings, aligned with their armed forces, and offered several sacrifices for liberating the land and restoring the glory and the pride of the homeland. Greetings to cate president Sadat who couragously took the war decision and fought it, with confidence in Allah, his nation, and his armed forces, thus opening through the October victory the road for peace.

Brothers and Sisters, The October victory has turned over a sad page in the history of the homeland that witnessed the shock of defeat, the loss of Sinai, the closing of the Suez Canal, the demolition of its cities and the forced emigration of their residents. Together with the millions of compatriots I was a witness to this sad phase with all its pains, sufferings and sacrifices.

I was witness to the steadfastness of a time-honoured people that refused defeat, offered much for rebuilding its armed forces, and withstood a bitter war of attrition until the October victory was accomplished. Together with this great generation, I was witness to the years of defeat and then to the joy of crossing and victory.

The October victory was accomplished through the will of Egypt's people, and the steadfastness and determination of its children restored to us our usurped land, in addition it restored our self-confidence and launched a new phase of the nation's march. Sinai was transformed from a battle field into a salient economic area on the land of Egypt. After the liberation of Sinai we proceeded with a similar liberalization of our political life and national economy.

In addition, we launched a sustainable process of comprehensive development resulting in several achievements in various areas of infrastructure, production and services. We have been conducting with confidence and irreversible resolve a parallel process of political, economic and social reform.

We could have never achieved all that had it not been for the October victory whose anniversary we celebrate today; a victory that we have achieved in 1973 by the souls and blood of our martyrs, the courage and heroism of our armed forces service men together with the resolve of a great generation of our people that challenged defeat and crossed to victory relying on its will. Brothers and Sisters, That was the epic of October 33 years ago.

This epic unravelled the determination of the people and proved its ability to stand out to challenge and make miracles. Egypt has witnessed several changes since 1973 affecting facts of the Egyptian reality with its issues, priorities, challenges and aspirations.

Our nation and the world around us have also witnessed unprecedented changes and still many new challenges and risks lie ahead. We derive from the anniversary of the victory resolve and determination to continue our march, and inspire confidence in our abilities to face domestic and foreign challenges.

We will monitor the implementation of the platform I put for last year on all its themes. We will go on establishing the pillars of our Egyptian democracy and the next year will be year of constitutional reforms. We will continue to liberalize our economy, opening up to the world, siezing available opportunities , luring gains, more investments, achieving increasing rates of growth, and providing more job opportunities for our youth. We will sustain focus on social dimensions of reform and development, enhance our support to poor families and we will never leave low-income brackets in the lurch, We will expand the social security net and will leave none midway and will channel achieved by the steps of economic reform so as to reflect on the daily life of the citizens. Inspired by the spirit of October, we grow more determined to upgrade and modernize our armed forces, and more convinced that peace needs power to protect it and to protect Egypt's safety, land, sovereignty and its supreme intersts.

We will continue to enhance the potentials of a strong, safe Egypt with its army, economy, democracy and the unity of its citizens, Muslims and Copts , its peasants, workers and intellectuals. We will never give up the independence of our will. We will defend the issues of our Arab nation and its identity. We will not allow anybody to undermine Egypt's regional role in the world. We will go on hand in hand preserving homeland's pledge and trust , achieving the ambitions of this stage , facing its challenges and establishing together the future which we are looking for. May Allah preserve Egypt as an invulnerable nation, forging its way with determination and confidence seeking good and peace for all. Many Happy Returns May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon you.
